I don’t trust an ingredient panel until I’ve seen what it does to a fatty acid profile on paper. That’s the bias I bring to this question, and I’ll name it up front: omega-3 versus omega-6 isn’t actually a fair fight for a dog with arthritic or allergic inflammation. It reads like one on a supplement label — two fatty acid families, pick a side — but the biology isn’t symmetrical, and neither is the evidence.

The premise I want to test first

The common pitch is that omega-6 is “the bad fat” and omega-3 is “the good fat,” full stop. That’s close enough to be useful and wrong enough to cause problems. Dogs need linoleic acid, an omega-6, for a functional skin barrier — deficient diets produce dry, flaky coats and slow wound healing. The issue isn’t omega-6 itself. Client-owned dogs with osteoarthritis fed a fish-oil-supplemented diet showed objective improvement in pain, lameness, and joint disease over three months, with the effect tracking a shift in their blood omega-3 fatty acid profile — the paper is summarized on PubMed. A separate weight-bearing study out of two university veterinary clinics, published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, found improved weight-bearing in osteoarthritic dogs on omega-3 supplementation versus placebo, at least over the short term studied.

I’m not aware of a comparably controlled trial showing omega-6 supplementation improving joint inflammation in dogs — because that’s not the mechanism omega-6 supports. Omega-6 supplementation earns its place for skin barrier and coat quality, not for turning down joint inflammation. If a label promises both from one ingredient, read the actual fatty acid breakdown before you believe it.

I’ve watched a twelve-year-old Labrador named Duke go through exactly this confusion. He was sixty-eight pounds, stiff getting up off the kitchen tile every morning, worse in cold weather, better by midday once he’d moved around. Omega-3 supplementation is additive to that plan, not a substitute for it.
