I’ve had more than one owner walk into my exam room convinced their dog was “turning aggressive,” when what I was actually watching on video was a dog who wanted very badly to say hello and had no way to get there.
Bodhi was a 3-year-old, 62-pound Goldendoodle whose owner brought me a phone full of walk videos. He’d see another dog half a block away, plant his front feet, and erupt — a high-pitched bark, spinning in circles, pulling so hard he’d cough. At the dog park, off leash, he was fine: soft body, play bows, no drama. That mismatch was the tell. A dog who is frustrated by a barrier — the leash, a fence, a car window — usually looks like Bodhi: loud, frantic, oriented toward the trigger, and completely different once the barrier is gone. A dog working through real aggression doesn’t usually flip that switch. The behavior travels with them, on leash or off, because it isn’t about access. It’s about distance.
That distinction matters more than most owners expect, because the two problems get treated almost oppositely. Rewarding your way through frustration by finally letting the dog approach can make the barking worse, not better, since you’ve just taught the leash-lunge-bark sequence pays off. Handling true aggression the same casual way can get someone bitten.
What Barrier Frustration Actually Looks Like
Frustration reactivity tends to show up as noise before it shows up as teeth. The dog strains toward the trigger rather than away from it. Ears are usually forward, tail is up and often loose or wagging, and the body weight is pitched ahead of the front paws, not braced backward. Owners describe it as their dog “losing his mind” to greet a person or dog he clearly likes in every other context. Once the trigger passes, or the leash goes slack and the dog gets to sniff and say hi, the whole performance can shut off within seconds.
This is functionally different from fear-based reactivity, where a dog wants distance rather than contact, and from resource guarding, where the trigger is an object rather than a social target. It also overlaps with a phenomenon called trigger stacking — a dog who’s already had a stressful vet visit, a startling delivery truck, and a missed nap is far more likely to blow up at the next ordinary trigger than the same dog on a quiet, well-rested day. AKC notes that cortisol from one stressor doesn’t clear instantly — some dogs settle within minutes, but others carry the physiological effects of a stressful encounter for hours or longer, which lowers the threshold for the next reaction. A dog who’s “fine most days” and then loses it at the mail carrier hasn’t necessarily gotten worse; the day may have simply stacked triggers faster than the dog could recover from them.

When the Reaction Is Actually Aggression
Here’s where I ask owners to slow down and actually describe the body, not just the sound. Aggression tends to look closed rather than open: a stiff, forward-leaning body with weight low and centered, a hard, fixed stare rather than darting glances, lips pulled back over the teeth rather than an open, panting mouth, and a tail that’s high and rigid rather than loose. The behavior isn’t limited to leash walks either — it shows up guarding the couch, stiffening over a food bowl, or reacting to a hand reaching toward a collar.
I worked with a dog named Ranger, a 5-year-old, 78-pound German Shepherd mix, whose owner had assumed his leash lunging was “just excitement” for almost a year. What actually stopped me was the pattern once we dug into the history: he’d also snapped at a houseguest reaching for his collar, and he guarded the dog bed hard enough that the family stopped letting the kids near it. On leash, he didn’t loosen up once other dogs passed — he stayed stiff and scanning for another ten or fifteen minutes. That combination, generalized across contexts and slow to resolve, is what pushed this out of frustration territory and into a behavior plan that involved a veterinary behaviorist, not just a training class.
That’s the split I want every owner to walk away with: frustration is loud, situational, and fast to switch off. Aggression is quieter in the buildup, generalizes beyond the leash, and takes longer to come down from. Neither label is a life sentence, but they call for different plans, and guessing wrong wastes time the dog doesn’t have.
Building a Walk That Lowers the Odds of Either
Whichever pattern you’re seeing, the walk itself is often the easiest lever to pull first. Distance is the cheapest tool in the toolbox — most dogs have a threshold distance from a trigger at which they can still take treats and think, and staying outside that distance during training is what actually changes the behavior over weeks, not the leash correction in the moment. AVSAB recommends reward-based methods over aversive tools like prong or e-collars for exactly this reason — punishment can suppress the visible lunge while leaving the underlying frustration or fear untouched, and in some dogs it worsens the association with the trigger.
A few things I ask owners to build into the routine regardless of which pattern they’re managing: predictable walk timing so the dog isn’t already stacked from an unpredictable day, a wider default walking radius around triggers rather than waiting until the dog reacts to create space, and a “look at that” or hand-target cue practiced at home first, so it’s fluent before you need it on a sidewalk. None of that is glamorous. It’s also the part that works.
Where Calming Support Can Help, and Where It Can’t
Supplements don’t fix a frustration-versus-aggression mix-up, and I say that upfront because owners often want a calming chew to be the whole plan. It isn’t. What it can do, in a dog whose baseline arousal runs high, is take the edge off enough that training actually has room to work.
A few ingredients show up repeatedly in the calming-support research worth knowing about. L-theanine, an amino acid found in tea, has been studied for its calming properties, and outside of one human study on psychotic anxiety using 400 mg per day for eight weeks, the broader evidence in Molecular Psychiatry is more mixed than marketing tends to suggest — worth knowing before assuming any dose will replicate that effect in a dog. Chamomile has a long history in traditional herbal care for relaxation, though a review in Biomedicines notes that, for most species, the evidence base is still mainly preclinical or traditional-use rather than robust clinical trials. Ashwagandha, particularly the KSM-66 extract, has more to point to: a systematic review in Cureus covering multiple randomized controlled trials found a moderate positive impact on stress reduction and cognitive performance. None of that is dog-specific proof, and I frame it that way with clients — these are structure/function ingredients that may help support a calmer baseline, not a treatment for aggression and not a substitute for a behavior plan.
I think about a Corgi named Pepper here, a 9-year-old who’d start pacing and pulling toward joggers about two blocks into every walk. Her owner was juggling a demanding job and didn’t have bandwidth for a full behavior-modification overhaul, so we built the smallest plan that could actually move the needle: a wider walking route away from the jogging path for six weeks, a hand-target cue practiced daily in the kitchen, and a calming chew added to her evening routine to help take the edge off her baseline restlessness. By week four, her owner texted me that Pepper could see a jogger across the street and just watch, without the pull. That’s one dog’s response, not a guarantee, but it’s the shape I look for: environment first, training second, supplement support as one piece alongside both — never the whole plan by itself.

Owners sometimes ask whether a male or female dog is more likely to react this way, and honestly, individual history and early socialization tend to explain far more than sex does. I’d rather spend the appointment on the dog in front of me than on a generalization that doesn’t hold up case to case.

Before your next walk, run through this with your dog specifically in mind — not the dog on the internet, yours:
- Does the reaction happen only on leash, or does it show up elsewhere too (resource guarding, collar-grabs, crowded rooms)?
- Does your dog’s body loosen and soften once the trigger is gone, or does it stay stiff and scanning for minutes afterward?
- Is the behavior oriented toward getting closer to the trigger, or putting distance between your dog and it?
- Have you mapped your dog’s threshold distance — the point where they can still take a treat and think?
- Are you managing distance proactively, before the reaction starts, rather than reacting after the lunge?
- If you’re using a calming supplement, is it supporting a training plan, or standing in for one?
If the pattern generalizes across contexts, escalates, or involves a bite or a near-bite, that’s a conversation for your veterinarian and likely a referral to a veterinary behaviorist, not a wait-and-see approach. The same logic that helps separate boredom from separation anxiety applies here: the pattern, not the single incident, is what tells you what you’re actually dealing with.
