Postbiotics vs. Fish Oil for Dog Inflammation: Which One Actually Helps More?

I read the label and the bloodwork before I read the claim on the bag. That habit is why, when an owner asks me “should I just switch my dog’s fish oil to a postbiotic, they’re both anti-inflammatory, right?” — I have to slow them down. They’re not answering the same question. One has repeat, instrumented data on a dog’s actual joint loading. The other has real but earlier-stage data on gut barrier markers. Conflating them because both carry the word “inflammation” on the label is exactly the kind of label-reading shortcut I try to talk owners out of.
Postbiotics are the inanimate byproducts of bacterial fermentation — short-chain fatty acids and related metabolites — left behind after gut bacteria digest fiber. Fish oil’s relevant fraction is long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, which compete with arachidonic acid in cell membranes and shift the eicosanoid pathway toward less inflammatory signaling molecules. Different substrate, different mechanism, different target tissue. That’s the premise I want to test against the evidence, not assume.
What the fish oil trials actually measured
The strongest data point I go back to with owners is a randomized, double-blinded trial that used force-plate analysis — an instrumented walkway that measures how much weight a dog actually puts on a limb, not just an owner’s impression of how their dog looks. Published in JAVMA, the study fed 38 client-owned dogs with osteoarthritis either a control diet or a food supplemented with 3.5% fish oil omega-3 fatty acids for 90 days. Peak vertical force on the most affected limb improved by 5.6% in the fish-oil group versus 0.4% in controls, and 82% of dogs on the test food showed measurable improvement in weight-bearing compared to 38% on the control diet.
That’s a hard number from an objective instrument, not an owner questionnaire alone, and it’s part of why I’ll tell an owner fish oil is worth discussing with their vet when a dog is showing joint stiffness. It doesn’t mean every dog responds the same amount, and the dose matters — the amount fed in that trial was substantially higher than what’s in a lot of over-the-counter chews, so I’d rather an owner check the EPA/DHA milligrams on a label against their dog’s weight than assume “fish oil” as a category is doing the same job at every dose.
What the postbiotic evidence covers — and doesn’t
Postbiotic research in dogs is younger, and it’s largely answering a different question: does the gut barrier and local gut inflammation improve. A study in Veterinary Sciences evaluated a prebiotic and postbiotic dietary supplement in healthy dogs and reported measurable shifts in gut microbiota composition alongside changes in intestinal barrier markers. Separately, a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial reported in PMC found an indole-rich postbiotic reduced itching in dogs — a signal that postbiotic metabolites can modulate a specific inflammatory pathway (in that case, one tied to skin and immune signaling), but that’s a different clinical endpoint than joint weight-bearing.
I don’t have a force-plate-grade postbiotic osteoarthritis trial to point to, and I won’t pretend one exists. If an owner’s actual concern is a dog favoring a hip on the stairs, the gut-barrier and itch data don’t answer that question yet, however promising the mechanism looks on paper.
One dog I worked with, a nine-year-old 62-pound Labrador mix named for the record only in my notes, came in because her owner noticed she’d started hesitating before jumping into the SUV — something she’d done without a second thought for years. It had crept in slowly, maybe over two months, worse in the evenings after her regular walk and worse on the cold tile of the kitchen than on the living room rug. The owner was already giving a probiotic chew for occasional loose stool and assumed it was “covering” inflammation generally. On exam and radiographs, she had bilateral hip changes consistent with early osteoarthritis, and her stool and GI history were unremarkable. Reading the label before the claim
This is where I put my flag down: read what the product is actually formulated to do, not what section of the store it’s sold in. A postbiotic label should specify the metabolite or strain source and, ideally, point to gut-health or barrier-function testing. A fish oil label should specify EPA and DHA content in milligrams per serving, not just “fish oil” as a generic ingredient, because the dose in the JAVMA trial was clinically meaningful and a lot of retail products are formulated well under it. Neither ingredient is inherently “stronger” — they’re built for different tissue.

Where movement and format still matter
Neither supplement replaces controlling weight or keeping a dog moving. A dog carrying extra weight puts more load through an arthritic joint regardless of what’s in the food bowl, and a sedentary gut doesn’t get the same motility benefit a moderately active one does.
