There’s a persistent idea that puzzle feeders and slow feeder bowls are two versions of the same product, and that whichever one is cuter or cheaper will do. It won’t. Where slow feeders fall short is temperament. A dog who’s gulping out of anxiety or resource guarding around other pets, rather than pure appetite, often just gets more frustrated at a ridged bowl and either paws it around the kitchen or gives up eating altogether. The bowl changes the geometry of the meal; it does nothing for the emotional state driving the behavior.

A puzzle feeder is solving a different equation. Instead of shrinking bite size, it makes the dog work — sniffing, nosing, pawing, or manipulating a mechanism — to release each piece of food.
